Who are Community Cancer Champions?

Community Cancer Champions are local volunteers based across Herefordshire and Worcestershire who help people learn about cancer in a simple, friendly way. They share easy‑to‑understand information about staying healthy, spotting signs early, and getting help when it’s needed. Champions are not health experts, they are everyday people who care about their community.

What Do Cancer Champions Do?

Champions help by:

  • Talking to people about ways to stay healthy
  • Sharing clear information about cancer checks
  • Encouraging people to see their GP if something feels wrong
  • Helping people find local support
  • Joining in with community events and activities
  • Listening to what local people need and passing this on to the project team

Why This Matters

Many people feel unsure or worried about cancer. Some don’t know where to get help. Champions make things easier by offering friendly chats in places people already trust, like community groups, clubs, and local organisations. Getting help early can save lives.

How You Can Get Involved

You can:

  • Share this opportunity with everyone
  • Welcome a Champion to visit your group or event
  • Share our simple information with your community
  • Help us reach people who may not usually hear health messages
  • Work with us to plan small activities or talks

Training is free, friendly, and open to everyone. You can promote it in newsletters, noticeboards, WhatsApp groups or team meetings.

Get Chatty...Get Checked

Our Get Chatty…Get Checked lung events are fun, friendly community pop-ups designed to get people talking about their health and wellbeing.

With our vibrant Chatty Van, interactive activities, and even a giant walk-in set of lungs, we create a relaxed space where individuals and families can learn about the signs and symptoms of cancer, pick up simple health tips, and have open, no-pressure conversations.

It’s all about raising awareness, encouraging early action, and helping people feel confident to take the next step in looking after their health.
